Stress is a constant feeling we battle every day, at times it’s caused by the world we live in, and other times we stress ourselves out.

I know it sounds crazy, no one wakes up and goes “let’s have a stressful day” but when we attempt to take control of things that are out of our control like getting involved in the drama at work and starting an argument with our spouse, we bring stress onto ourselves. Good thing I have news for you! God doesn’t want you to pursue a stressful life he wants you to find peace. 1 Peter 3:11 says “They must turn from evil and do good; they must seek peace and pursue it.” To strive for peace we have to begin with three things.

  1. Acknowledge you’re pursuing stress.

“Let us examine our ways and test them, and let us return to the Lord.”‭‭Lamentations‬ ‭3:40‬

We’re surrounded by stress every day. Still, the hardest part is figuring out whether we’re stressing ourselves out or if it’s the world stressing us out. We can do this by asking one simple question, do I trust God? Stupid question right? Of course, I trust God! Yet do you trust God in all things, even the little things? I find it easiest to stress out when I think about how I’ll make something happen, or how I’ll handle what life throws at me. I don’t have much faith in myself so I begin to stress. Once I come to realize God’s never let me down, I let go and put my trust in him. Remember what God has done for you, and see how your most peaceful moments were when God was working the hardest and you were working the least. Our trust in God can’t be focused on only the big things like our finances, but also the little things like our appearance. We are willingly choosing not to trust in God and we’re trusting in our own power, that’s pursuing stress. Another way we’re seeking stress is by entertaining it.

  2. Stop entertaining stress.

The news, social media, and even life itself contains enough gossip to stress us out. As humans, it’s easy to be nosy, to find the juiciest story to be a part of. We love attention, if we can have the slightest part in a drama-filled story we’ll take it. Don’t get me wrong drama is entertaining but we can’t allow it to consume us. Once were consumed by it, we then find ourselves stressed out. God never intended for you to gossip or be in the middle of it. Proverbs 20:19 says “A gossip betrays a confidence; so avoid anyone who talks too much”. Don’t be this person. Because in the end, you’ll be the person who talks too much, the one who’s losing friends to be in the midst of chaos, stressed out because of the drama. Don’t go through life searching for a role in every story, trust you’re the main character in God’s plan for your life. The final step we must take is unlocking peace.

  3. Unlock peace.

First and foremost God brings peace, it was brought to you when you accepted him into your heart. As addressed to the Christians by Apostle Paul Colossians 3:15 says “Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful”. Peace lives inside of you, it’s easily accessible but you might have to put yourself in a different environment, action, or situation to unlock it. Listening to music, reading a book, going on a walk, and other activities or places all help us detach from the world. When we take distractions out of our day this is where God’s peace is felt. My “alone time” is not me, myself, and I, it’s God and me. This is where he speaks to me, where he’s able to calm my anxious thoughts (Psalm 94:19), heal my restless mind, and soothe my stressful soul. This is the key to unlocking peace. Next time you have your alone time, think of it as a time for you and God, a time to recalibrate. A moment to lay down everything that’s making you stressed and a moment where you can find God’s peace.

Leave Stress Alone
